The right 1-to-1. Only when there is the right one-to-one connection between tutor and student can the student truly benefit academically from private tutoring sessions. Recognizing that the tutor-student relationship must be student-specific to catalyze academic improvement, Turnberry Tutor has developed an adaptable teaching style to best “talk” to her students and communicate ideas most effectively. Changing her teaching methods to accommodate students’ needs has resulted in Turnberry Tutor’s remarkable success over the past 12 years.

Learn how your child learns best. Every child has a unique set of learning strengths and weaknesses. Turnberry Tutor conducts a diagnostic evaluation during her first session to determine your child’s unique skill set. Based on this initial evaluation and through observations made over the course of several sessions, Turnberry Tutor develops a customized learning program that utilizes your child’s strengths to target his or her weaknesses. Perhaps your child is a right-brained dominant individual who excels at drawing and creative writing, but has difficulty solving math problems. Turnberry Tutor would then draw on your child’s strengths by showing him or her how to solve math problems with images and diagrams. By determining your child’s unique skill set, Turnberry Tutor learns how to best instruct your child to achieve optimal academic improvement.

Keep focus and maintain interest. Sitting in a large class, many children have difficultly concentrating on a teacher’s lesson and lose interest quickly. Turnberry Tutor prevents this common occurrence by implementing fun learning activities during one-to-one sessions with your child. By introducing drills, game playing and mental exercises, Turnberry Tutor adds excitement to each learning session and keeps your child focused on the subject matter.

Build schemata, not rote memorization. Although Turnberry Tutor incorporates memorization techniques into her learning sessions, she focuses on helping children develop broader schemata to understand new concepts and integrate new information. Detailed facts memorized by rote have a limited lifespan. Broader schemata, however, can last a lifetime. For this reason, Turnberry Tutor helps children develop the ability to build broad conceptual generalizations that they can apply to specific cases to solve a multitude of problems.
