Getting the ‘YES!’ letter. I clearly remember my college acceptance letter and everything surrounding the day it arrived. There had been talk early in the week at my high school that the Early Decision letters for most universities had been mailed. Every afternoon after school that week, I frantically rushed home and ran immediately to the pile of mail scattered across my dining room table. On one particular afternoon, I saw the envelope I was anxiously awaiting marked by the Princeton University return address in the upper left hand corner. Student peers had speculated that thicker envelopes meant acceptance, thinner ones rejection. I first patted down the envelope for an initial sign, but growing impatient with my ability to gauge its measurement on the thin-thick spectrum of envelopes, I proceeded to rip open the seal. Unfolding the letter with shaking hands, I immediately read the single, simple word bold-typed and centered at the top of the page: YES! At the time, that one word meant the world to me. It meant that I had been accepted to Princeton University and all of my hard work and effort had finally been validated. I was overcome with feelings of elation, joy, accomplishment and satisfaction.
